The POAMS stance on Einsteinian Relativity and Time Dilation.
Currently, the Physics community is split between orthodox Einsteinian relativists and a burgeoning reactionary group of anti-Einsteinians, mostly members of the NPA (Natural Philosophy Alliance), followers of the late Herbert Dingle who congregate under the banner of ‘Dissidents’, sometimes called the ‘Einstein bashers’. The two groups remain chronically divided over the issue of ‘relativistic time dilation’. The mainline Einsteinians regard time-dilation as a real consequence of relative motion while their opponents regard it as no more than apparent, insisting that the ‘real time’ by which things endure, is a universal and absolute ‘God’s Time’ which is, as it were, ticking away behind the scenes everywhere, in the void as in matter.
Although POAMS is critical of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, it is not aligned with any of these ‘Dissident’ groups. In Machian physics, all motion is relative; that is to say, the motion of any one body has to be relative to some other body or bodies, there being no motion with respect to nothing or to ‘space itself’ – whatever that might mean. All masses are therefore universally and instantly interconnected, as indeed they are in an overall-conserved angular momentum nexus in accordance with what is known as Mach’s Principle.
The difference, then, between the POAMS version of relativity and Einstein’s is two-fold. Firstly, in Einstein’s version, due to the limit on physical interaction set by his ‘absolute speed of light’, there can be no instantaneous at-a-distance correlation of the sort required by Mach – also, as it so happens, by standard model quantum theory (the Copenhagen school of quantum physics after Niels Bohr). Secondly, in Einstein’s Special Theory there is no ultimately preferred reference-frame for the motion of a body. The motion is simply relative to whomsoever happens to be observing it, with all such observer-frames regarded as physically indistinguishable. In the Neo-Machian view, however, there is a definite physical distinction between real and apparent relative motion. Real motion is ultimately referred to an ‘alpha frame’, which is that of the Centre-of-Mass-Coordinate-system (CMCS), the barycentre of all the various angular momentum motions from astronomy to microphysics. In POAMS, this ‘alpha frame’ is the reference-zero of the scale of time-dilations and is called Deep Space Time (DST), which is the time registered by a clock which is at the greatest – theoretically infinite distance from massive bodies. (Like the zero on the scale of degrees Kelvin, this zero on the scale of time-dilations may not be actualy reachable but is approachable by downwards extrapolation from the scale of actual differences. )
Also, in POAMS, as for its progenitor, Mach, there is no space other than that defined by the distances between bodies, and there is no time other than what is measured in physical motion and change – that is, by arbitrarily chosen standards like that of the revolutions of the earth around the sun, the moon around the earth, the motion of the sand-grains in an hour-glass, the hands around the face of a clock … and so on. Certainly, there is neither length nor time in and of ‘the vacuum’ as such. Length and time are inseparable dimensions of angular momentum, with no meaning apart from that.
From the fact that mass, length and time are not independent measures but thoroughly inter-dependent components of a single dimensional package (angular momentum), it follows that any body which moves relatively to another moves in time as well as space. (Witness the objects observed by Römer.) Indeed, there is no space without time nor time without space. The two dimensions are entirely complementary. These two geometrical, orthogonally projected dimensional components of relative motion, the one in seconds and the other in metres-divided by c (i.e. units of 3.3 nanoseconds) produce, by straightforward Pythagoras, a temporal resultant equivalent to what is called ‘time-dilation’ in Einsteinian relativity. All this is explained in the POAMS literature. [See following, Seminal Publications and Resources.] As the Dissidents see it, however, if motion is completely relative, as it is according to Einstein, then A’s description of B’s motion relative to A has to be symmetrical with B’s description of A’s motion relative to B, so that regardless of how A and B move relatively to each other, when they return together at the end of the motion, their respective records of the duration of the motion must be the same. This is the notorious so-called ‘Clock Paradox’ or ‘Twins Paradox’. These Dissidents remain unconvinced by Einstein’s teaching that whichever party to the motion actively reverses his outward journey to bring the two back together, breaks the symmetry and ends up having recorded less time than the other for the overall motion. Most mainline physicists would say that the Dissidents’ assumption of symmetry between the motions of the two observers is in complete denial of the experimental facts as established by researchers such as Hafele and Keating, for example.
In POAMS, the motions of bodies are gauged not only relatively to one another but also relatively to the angular momentum Alpha Frame. In such cases, the asymmetry distinguishing which observer’s duration is dilated and which is contracted is ultimately manifest in terms of acceleration in relation to that frame rather than simply in the perspectival frames of the two observers. This Alpha Frame is the frame of the universal angular momentum nexus as a whole, and motions with regard to it are typically manifest by visceral accompaniments, as for example, when the passengers in a train or coach lurch forward when the driver applies the brakes or thrown backward when he presses the accelerator – or, to take another example, the force we feel when pressed against the inner surface of a centrifuge. This Alpha Frame is also, in Machian Physics, the frame in which gyroscopes orientate themselves.
The Alpha Frame of the angular momentum nexus or CMCS (Centre of Mass Coordinate System) is therefore the frame in which the time of a body in force-free motion is the least time-dilated of all. It is the basic time-frame with reference to which, ultimately, all motions and times are manifest. In POAMS, because this time-frame is that of masses which are furthest from one another, this basic time is called Deep Space Time (DST). This corresponds more or less to what astronomers call the ‘frame of the fixed stars’, the Machian frame of reference in accordance with ‘Mach’s Principle’. And since, in POAMS, all motion is fundamentally rotational and therefore ‘gyroscopic’, this same Alpha Frame serves as the reference-frame for the magnitude and direction of all motions whatsoever. It is the ultimate zero in the scale of relativistic time-dilation. (In that sense, Deep Space Time replaces the ‘God’s Time’ of classical physics.)
In this way, POAMS restores the ‘universal’ time-background that the Dissidents castigate Einstein for seeking to remove, whilst retaining Einsteinian time-dilation for motions relative to that Machian frame. However, so entrenched have both parties to the conflict become, that instead of this prospect of reconciliation being welcomed by those warring factions, POAMS will undoubtedly be shot at by both sides.
